Pass Christian artist Marian Knobbe comes about her skills through a lifetime of study: she has painted and drawn since she was old enough to swipe her mother’s typing paper.
Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Knobbe was a navy brat who followed her family through many moves, but she always carried with her a desire to paint. She studied art throughout elementary school, and in her early teens ended up in suburban Chicago. There, she occasionally skipped classes to take the train into the city, where she would visit the Chicago Art Institute. Knobbe later took her formal studies in art at Red Rocks College in Lakewood, Colorado.
She moved to the Pass in 1984, where she met Don Scott, her eventual husband. Recently, they operated Blue Skies Gallery in Long Beach, Mississippi, but within the last couple of years, they closed it so that Marian could concentrate on art and Don on contracting.
Knobbe works in watercolor on paper, and with oil and acrylic on canvas. She is best known for her imaginative scenes along the Gulf Coast of shorelines, oak groves and islands. Presently, Knobbe shows her work at Hillyer House in Ocean Springs, and at Century Hall in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
