[Update 8/27/2018: IndieReader gave A Lyle Saxon Reader five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and called it “An excellent introduction”!]

For Lyle Saxon fans, I wanted to share some great news. A Lyle Saxon Reader: Lost Stories of the French Quarter and Buried Treasure is in pre-production! Furthermore, it’s on schedule to meet the September 28 release date.

A Lyle Saxon Reader from Cultured Oak Press contains thirty-nine of Saxon’s earliest works. Dating from 1919-1923, these stories originally published in the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper. Since only one of them has been in print since that time, this book is a real time capsule.

Saxon Was a Journalist

Saxon grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As a young man, he moved to New Orleans so he could follow a journalism career. While at the Times-Picayune, Saxon worked a heavy schedule, but as a result, he gained the experience to write his later classics, Fabulous New Orleans, Old Louisiana, Lafitte the Pirate, Children of Strangers and others.

Saxon’s work led him to start a preservationist crusade responsible for saving many historic French Quarter structures from destruction by developers.

Reviews Are Already Coming In

Anyone with an interest in the city’s early history or the literary prowess of Lyle Saxon in particular will find these compelling, offbeat, and powerful works which, when presented together under one cover, create a solid work of literary and historical achievement. The collection should be considered an essential acquisition for any library holding purporting to be authoritative on the subject of New Orleans.

–Diane Donovan at Midwest Book Review (upcoming)

The stories in A Lyle Saxon Reader are essentially as they first appeared, but with new edits, notes and introduction.

Donovan continued:

“The stories have been out of print since their original publication, which makes this anthology a treasure trove unequalled elsewhere.”
